In her latest article for Forbes, “Just Realized The Tax Return You Filed Is Wrong? Don’t Panic,” Managing Member Guinevere Moore writes that taxpayers discovering errors on filed returns often wonder if they must amend.

“Taxpayer have a legal obligation to file a timely tax return that is truthful, accurate and complete. But if the taxpayer discovers after a return is filed that something was wrong or missing, is there an obligation to correct the return? Shockingly, the answer is almost always no. Even without a legal obligation to correct a mistake on a tax return, however, doing so may be in the taxpayer’s best interest.”

Guinevere is a contributor to Forbes’ IRS Watch, a dream team of tax controversy litigators and taxpayer advocates who are keeping watch on IRS positions and trends influenced by regulatory changes, Congress, and the Courts.
